Hiking on The Garden Route
Andy and I had the BEST time exploring this beautiful, wild, serene coastline of The Garden Route with what felt like SO many hidden gems. We were constantly stumbling upon new waterfalls, tracks, walks, that it felt like we could have spent so much longer than we did.
I can’t wait to come back here one day for more.
I’ve highlighted below some of our favourite routes, ranging from busier and more well-trodden paths, to a couple where we didn’t see a single other person the whole time.
Wilderness
Kaaimans River 1 hours round trip, 5km, moderate trail
The most unexpected hike recommended to us by our Airbnb host, Thandi. We accessed this wide flowing river from our Airbnb, however there are a few access routes. We followed Thandi’s hand drawn map which lead us through overgrown trees, clambering over thick tree roots bursting through the path, along a rocky ravine all the way to the rivers mouth. This hike was super special, because the we had final destination totally to ourselves. Think huge, flat rocks shaped from the ebb and flow of the river across them, smoothing their tops over time. Fresh, cold temperature perfect for swimming leaving you totally refreshed. Bring something to lay on, and supplies to enjoy a few hours chilling.
Half Collared Kingfisher Trail
8km 3hours beginner / easy 190 rand / £8 GBP pp entry fee
This stunning trail follows a river the whole way and is comprised of boardwalks and paths making it an easy hike. The waterfall at the end is the perfect temperature for swimming so I’d advise to take a towel and picnic and make the most of spending either the morning / afternoon there. A well trodden path likely to be busy with other hikers and tourist groups.
Robberg National Park
9km 4hours round trip moderate trail
The diversity in landscape made this one of my top hiking experiences. From grassy hill, to boardwalk, to rock climbing, to white sandy beach, this trail has it all. Stunning views from the peninsula at every angle. Get there early to ensure you get a car parking space & bring plenty of water! There is a kiosk at the car park selling coffee, water, smoothies and snacks if required.
Wild Spirit Hostel
6 hour circular hike - moderate
Pass the incredible 1000+ year old yellowwood tree and continue on the route through paths generally shaded by the tall tree branches providing cool respite from the beating sun.
Magic forest walk - 1 hour, moderate Dappled by sunlight, this walk offers the perfect start to your day. Weave in and out of tree trunks and branches, overgrown and tangled across the path way. Stop at the scenic waterhole, enjoy the total calm through the silence, the only sounds provided by the waters flow and the birds dancing above.
Waterfall hike 2km 1 hour round trip We squeezed this in and were so glad we took the time before leaving. A short walk downhill through the forest opens out into a truly incredible waterfall, rushing over rocks and plunging into a clear, freshwater pool where you can enjoy time bathing and soaking up the serenity of this magical place.
Nature’s Valley & Salt River Hike from Kuthumba
11km - 4 hours round trip Moderate - difficult due to heat
If there is one hike on this list you decide to do…make it this one. As we were staying in Kuthumba Eco Village, we started the hike from here (Google Maps coordinates = [-33.9787206, 23.4934249]) however you can also access the salt river from Nature’s Valley beach. The path down was simple to follow, and offered a shaded tree canopy most of the way. The viewpoint was jaw dropping beautiful, and from there the short hike down to the waters edge didn’t take too long. We spent most of the day at the river, unable to believe the vibrant colours surrounding us, disturbed by nobody with the whole place to ourselves for the full day. Make sure you bring supplies: sun cream, plenty of water, hats and snacks to last the whole day, as I promise you won’t want to leave.
If you find yourself on The Garden Route and give any of these hikes a go - let me know! Save this post for your Garden Route adventures, or send it to someone you think might be interested in a South African adventure.
Happy exploring!
