Segovia: A Perfect Day Trip from Madrid

During my University years in 2014, I had the pleasure of working during one summer for 3 months as an au pair in Segovia, a charming town just an hour away from Madrid by high-speed train. I lived with a family of 5, who had twin boys aged 11 and one daughter aged 7. It was one of my earliest solo travel experiences, where I learnt to trust my intuition and grew my confidence massively. So, here’s a little info from my time here.

I’d recommend Segovia as a day trip from Madrid, and you could also spend an overnight here if you wanted to make it a longer trip. The train is super easy and tickets can either be purchased at Madrid Station, or you can pre purchase via Renfe here.

Segovia is the perfect day trip / leisurely weekend getaway from Madrid. Its rich in history, has stunning architecture, and great options for food. Here's a glimpse of what makes Segovia so special and why you should add it to your travel itinerary.

Exploring Segovia

1. The Aqueduct of Segovia: The iconic Roman Aqueduct which is UNESCO World Heritage Site is what you’ll find when you Google search Segovia. It dominates the town's skyline with its towering arches and is incredibly well-preserved! Walking along this historic structure, you can almost feel the centuries of history that have passed beneath its arches.

2. Alcázar of Segovia: This fairytale castle looks like it jumped straight out of a storybook. The Alcázar, gives you amazing views of the surrounding landscape. Don't miss climbing the Tower of John II for panoramic vistas.

3. Segovia Cathedral: Located in the main Plaza Mayor, the Segovia Cathedral is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The cathedral’s interior is also super impressive, with huge stained glass windows.

Food and local traditions

Segovia is not just about stunning sights; it’s also a food lover's paradise. Here are some must-try foodie experiences:

1. Cochinillo Asado: Segovia is famous for its roast suckling pig, a delicacy you can’t miss. The skin is perfectly crispy, and the meat is tender and flavourful. For the best experience, head to Mesón de Cándido or José María, both of which are renowned for their cochinillo.

2. Ponche Segoviano: This traditional dessert is a sweet, layered sponge cake with marzipan and custard, topped with powdered sugar. It’s the perfect way to end a meal and can be found in most local bakeries.

3. Tapas Bars: Just like in Madrid, tapas culture is alive and well in Segovia. Try the local jamón, chorizo, and various pintxos paired with a glass of red wine. Taberna El Fogón Sefardí is a great spot to sample a variety of tapas in a cozy setting.
