The Best Beaches in the Algarve

The Algarve is like home to me, having grown up visiting the sandy cliffs of the south coast of Portugal since the age of 2, I feel an overwhelming sense of peace and calm whenever I step off the plane in Faro. Whilst the beaches on the south coast provide a perfect setting to kick your flip flops off, relax onto a sun bed and let hours pass as you refill your energy soaking up the Algarve sun, I’ve spent some time driving up the West Coast to explore what else this luscious country has to offer. If you can’t tell already, I’m a huge beach lover, and there’s genuinely not many other places that make me feel as present and content as being by the ocean.

Below you’ll find a list I’ve been making over the years of my favourite beaches in the Algarve, from the south coast all the way up to Praia do Tonel. If you were to drive directly there from Faro it would only take a couple of hours, but my recommendation if possible would be to get yourself a vehicle (car or camper), and spend 1-2 weeks driving the West coast. You’ll be in awe at each little cove, coastline and cliff that you stop off at because genuinely every single one is beautiful and unique. Find below my favourites that I’ve come across so far.

Praia do Barril

Imagine a beach where you reach the golden sands by crossing a scenic little bridge and hopping on a quaint train that chugs through a nature reserve. Welcome to Praia do Barril! This beach is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and boasts a super cute, laid-back vibe. What makes it unique is the Anchor Graveyard – hundreds of rusty anchors lined up in the dunes, an incredibly artistic tribute to the region's tuna fishing history. The water here is calm and crystal clear, perfect for a relaxing swim.

Praia da Amália

Named after the famous Fado singer Amália Rodrigues, who used to spend her holidays here, Praia da Amália is a true hidden paradise. To get here, you’ll need to hike through a lush, forested path, adding a little twist to your beach day. The secluded beach is framed by dramatic cliffs and features a small waterfall trickling down to the sand. It’s the perfect spot for those looking for tranquility and a touch of magic.

Praia da Benagil

While Praia da Benagil is gaining popularity due to the famous Benagil Sea Cave, it still feels incredibly special every time I visit. I make a point to go each summer, and the best time is first thing in the morning before the sunrise. You can rent paddle boards at the beach and drift out into the cool ocean as you watch the sun rise over the sea, creating the most stunning glassy mirrored effect on the ocean. The beach itself is small and picturesque, with golden sands and calm waters. You can take your paddle board or kayak into the sea cave, where sunlight filters through an opening in the roof, illuminating the cavern with a surreal glow. It’s an unforgettable experience!

Praia da Arrifana

Surfers, this one’s for you! Praia da Arrifana is a stunning crescent-shaped beach with powerful waves and a great surf scene. The dramatic cliffs surrounding the beach provide a breathtaking backdrop, and the charming village of Arrifana perched on the cliffside offers some great spots to grab a bite after hitting the waves. Even if you’re not into surfing, the views alone are worth the visit.

Praia da Odeceixe

Praia da Odeceixe is where the river meets the sea, creating a unique landscape with a mix of freshwater and saltwater. The sand dunes and the surrounding cliffs add to the scenic beauty. Take a stroll along the river, try paddleboarding, or just lay back and enjoy the sun.

Praia do Tonel

Located near the historic town of Sagres, Praia do Tonel is a favourite among surfers and those seeking rugged natural beauty. The beach is bordered by towering cliffs, providing shelter from the wind and creating a super dramatic setting. The surf here is consistent, making it a hotspot for both beginners and seasoned surfers. Don’t miss the stunning sunsets from the clifftops – it’s a magical way to end your day.

Praia da Galé

If you’re looking for a beach that feels endless, Praia da Galé is your spot. Stretching for miles, this beach offers plenty of space to find your perfect patch of sand. The western end is quieter and more secluded, while the eastern end has a few beach bars and restaurants where you can grab a cold drink and some fresh seafood. The rock formations along the shore are great for exploring and add a touch of rugged charm to the landscape. My favourite restaurant in the Algarve is situated next to this beach, called Vila Joya Sea. If you can plan your day ahead and get a table for dinner booked in advance, you won’t regret it.

Why Visit These Beaches?

These beaches are the Algarve’s best-kept secrets, offering a mix of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty away from the crowded tourist spots. Whether you’re a surfer chasing the perfect wave, a family looking for a peaceful retreat, or an adventurer seeking hidden gems, there’s something for everyone. The Algarve’s coastline is incredibly diverse, and exploring these lesser-known beaches will give you a deeper appreciation for this stunning region.
