Ericeira

Surfing in the sunshine on Portugal’s West Coast.

Just 45 minutes drive from Lisbon, or 1 hour in a bus you’ll find Ericeira, a charming coastal town many people visit for it’s well-known surf beaches & chilled out vibe. I took a leisurely drive up from the Algarve to visit a friend who was working there for the summer, and stopped in at some beautiful beaches on the West coast (see my post for my favourites!). As we drove into Ericeira, I had the biggest smile on my face, it felt so similar to how I remember parts of the Algarve when I was younger. Cobbled wonky streets, faded pastel paint peeling off the antiquated stone buildings, bright pink bougainvillea trailing off the corner of so many, street signs made from old blue and white Portuguese tiles, all set on a beautiful beachfront as the waves crashed into shore. My visit to Ericeira was nothing short of magical, and I can't wait to share my experiences with you.

Surfing the Best Beaches

Ericeira is renowned for its exceptional surf spots, attracting surfers from around the globe. When I was recently travelling in India, the surf community there were asking questions about Ericeira, saying they knew about it from fellow surf travellers stories, Each beach has its unique charm and challenges, catering to surfers of all skill levels.

Ribeira d’Ilhas: One of the most famous surf spots in Portugal, Ribeira d’Ilhas offers consistent waves and a lively atmosphere. It’s apparently ideal for both beginners and experienced surfers, making it a great place to start your day.

Coxos: Known for its powerful and challenging waves, Coxos is a favourite among advanced surfers. The reef break here supposedly produces some of the best waves in Europe!

Foz do Lizandro: This beach is perfect for those new to surfing or looking for a more relaxed experience. The waves are more gentle, and the ocean is sandy at the bottom rather than some of the other more rocky surfaces. This is where I spent the morning with my friend trying to catch some waves, and it can still be pretty challenging if you’re not used to paddling out with a current!

After a morning of surfing, there's nothing better than returning to a welcoming and comfortable place to relax. During my visit, I stayed at the Salty Pelican Hostel, a beautifully designed hostel that, while on the pricier side, offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. The hostel’s aesthetic, friendly staff, and communal vibe make it a great place to meet fellow travellers and unwind after a day on the waves. They also help arrange surf, yoga etc and you can even book on an organised retreat if you’re looking for a solo longer trip to boost your wellbeing.

Ericeira’s Food and Drink Scene

Ericeira’s culinary scene is a mix of old and new. Traditional Portuguese cafés where you can have your morning espresso and ouriço (a local sweet almond cake), to modern pop-ups with share plates & natural Portuguese wines. There’s something to satisfy every palate.

Pastries at Casa da Fernanda - the ouriços look a bit like a sponge cupcake but the almond flour bites of heaven are just to die for! Think crisp outside, buttery inside, soft and spongey and perfet addition to your morning coffee.

Lunch at Mar d’Areia: For a true taste of Ericeira, head to Mar d’Areia, a local favorite known for its fresh seafood dishes. It’s a little more inland, so no ocean views, but the flavour of the grilled sardines and seafood rice will make up that!

Afternoon Coffee at Dear Rose Cafe: After lunch, stop by Dear Rose Cafe, a cozy spot perfect for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. Their coffee is superb, and the pastries are on point. It’s a great place to relax and soak in the laid-back vibe of Ericeira.

Evening Drinks at Jukebox Bar: End your day with a visit to Jukebox Bar, a lively spot with a great selection of cocktails and local beers. The retro ambiance and friendly crowd make it the perfect place to unwind and share stories of the day’s adventures.

Hidden Gems

While the main attractions are undoubtedly appealing, don’t miss out on Ericeira’s hidden gems:

Ouriço Bar: As the oldest nightclub in Portugal, Ouriço Bar offers a unique blend of history and nightlife. Located right by the sea, it’s a fantastic spot to enjoy a drink while listening to the waves crash against the rocks.

Sunset at Praia do Sul: For the perfect end to your day, head to Praia do Sul to watch the sunset. The view is absolutely stunning, with the sun dipping below the horizon, providing that optimal golden hour

Wandering the Best Streets in Ericeira

Rua Dr. Eduardo Burnay: This bustling street is the heart of Ericeira, lined with charming shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Rua da Ericeira: A quaint street perfect for a leisurely stroll, Rua da Ericeira features beautiful traditional houses, vibrant tiles, and cozy little shops. It’s a photographer’s dream!

Rua dos Bombeiros Voluntários: This street leads you to the stunning Fisherman’s Beach (Praia dos Pescadores). Along the way, you’ll find a mix of local eateries and boutiques, offering a taste of everyday life in Ericeira.
