A Guide to Visiting The Algarve
The Algarve holds a special place in my heart.
Since I was two years old, I’ve spent countless summers exploring its sun-kissed shores with my family. Over the years, it has evolved from a sleepy coastal region to a bustling tourist hotspot, especially popular among UK travellers and homebuyers. Despite these changes, every visit feels like a homecoming to me. Stepping off the plane to that hot blanket of sunshine and sweet smell of the eucalyptus trees. The Algarve’s unique blend of stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and rich history continues to captivate me. Here, I’ll share some of my favourite spots and tips to help you make the most of your visit to this epic region.
Lagos: A Blend of Adventure and Relaxation
Lagos is a vibrant area full of tourists, including a LOT of Australians! Its beaches are among the most beautiful in the Algarve, with dramatic cliffs and intricate caves. You can spend hours climbing through these natural formations, discovering hidden nooks and crannies. I have fond memories of driving up the coast to have a night out with friends, packing a few sleeping bags and blankets, and making our bed behind the rocks to wake up in the morning to the sunrise peeking through the caves. Despite its popularity, Lagos offers numerous budget-friendly options for dining and accommodation, making it an accessible destination to visit.
Vale do Lobo & Quinta do Lago: Luxury at a Price
If you’re seeking a luxurious holiday, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago are the places to be. These areas are dotted with modern, magazine-worthy homes and provide a secure, hassle-free environment perfect for families. However, if you prefer a more authentic, off-the-beaten-track experience, you might find these locales lacking in local flavour and quite expensive. Nonetheless, they’re worth a day trip for their beaches, high-end restaurants, and beautiful landscapes. If you’re into golf, this is also a golfing holiday hotspot.

Vale do Lobo Beach: A summer hotspot for teenagers looking to party.
Julias Beach Bar: A relaxed beach bar, ideal for sunset drinks.
Izzy’s Beach Bar: Located just along from Julias, offering a great lunch menu and a perfect spot to spend a leisurely afternoon by the sea.
Quinta do Lago also boasts the impressive Campus sports complex, where you can access tennis courts, a gym, and other facilities on a day pass.
Loulé: The Heart of Portuguese Tradition
Loulé is a gem for those who appreciate the charm of a traditional Portuguese town. With its faded pastel buildings, cobbled streets, and bustling fish markets, it offers a delightful escape from the more touristy areas. The Loulé market, held every Sunday, is a must-visit. Here, you can enjoy a coffee and a pastel de nata while soaking in the vibrant colors and aromas of fresh produce.
For those who love treasure hunting, Loulé and nearby Quarteria host numerous gypsy markets. While you’ll need to sift through a lot of “junk,” there are genuine gems to be found. Check online for market dates as they vary seasonally.
Faro Old Town: A Day of Historic Charm
Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is often overlooked by tourists, but it’s well worth a visit, especially for its enchanting old town. Spend a day wandering through its narrow, cobbled streets, and you'll be transported back in time. The historic architecture, ancient city walls, and charming squares offer a delightful glimpse into the region's past. Enjoy a leisurely meal at one of these eateries and soak in the unique blend of old and new that characterises this vibrant city.
Day Trip Highlights
Benagil Beach: A day trip to Benagil is a must. The caves are a marvel, and for a memorable meal, head to Rei das Praias on Praia dos Caneiros.
Portimão: Another great spot with a massive beach club, NoSoloÁgua. There are two locations, but the Portimão one is the best one to visit.
Vila Joya Sea: For a splurge, my top dining recommendation in the Algarve is Vila Joya Sea. It’s an exquisite experience, so book in advance and plan for a leisurely evening.
